This bundle includes a wellbeing scan of your baby by an Obstetric Consultant, relevant to your gestation, plus a non-invasive prenatal test (NIPT), or Harmony test. Your baby needs to be at least 10 weeks gestation for the test to work – please contact us prior to booking if you are unsure of when you will be 10 weeks pregnant, so that we can ensure you will be the correct gestation.
What is the Harmony test?
Harmony is a non-invasive blood test that screens for specific chromosome conditions in a pregnancy and can be carried out from 10 weeks gestation. When you’re pregnant, your blood contains tiny amounts of your baby’s DNA. The Harmony prenatal test looks at this DNA to provide accurate information about the likelihood for the most common chromosome conditions such as Down syndrome (trisomy 21), Edward’s syndrome (trisomy 18), and Patau’s syndrome (trisomy 13).
What else can the Harmony test do?
In addition to screening for the conditions listed above, you can choose to add on the following tests:
Fetal sex – so you know whether your baby is male or female (also available with twins).
Sex Chromosome Aneuploidy – assesses differences in the number of X and Y chromosomes, which can result in certain learning and/or behavioural challenges in addition to other health issues.
Harmony versus traditional tests for Down syndrome
|Detection rate*||False-positive rate**|
99 in 100
1 in 1600
|79 in 100||1 in 20|
* Correctly indicates a high chance for Down syndrome when it is present
** Reports a high chance for Down syndrome when it is not actually present
Does a low chance result mean that the baby does not have Down Syndrome?
No, any screening test carries a chance of a ‘false negative’, however the chance of this happening with the Harmony test is much lower than with conventional Down screening.
If I have a high chance result, does that mean that the baby’s chromosomes are abnormal?
No, not necessarily; it means that there is a higher chance that they are. In this case, you could opt for diagnostic testing such as an amniocentesis or chorionic villus sampling (CVS) through your NHS care provider. This package includes a follow-up online Obstetric Consultation, should your results show a higher chance, to provide support and counselling to help you reach that decision.
What if I have twins?
The Harmony Non Invasive Prenatal Test and technology can also be applied to twin pregnancies, but is not suitable in the case of a vanishing twin.
Will I always get a result?
3 out of 100 (3%) women will require a repeat test. When the test is repeated, we receive a result in approximately two thirds of these samples. You will only be charged for the price of the scan if we are unable to obtain a result.
What if the scan shows that my pregnancy is not viable?
If we sadly diagnose a miscarriage during your scan, you will be refunded the cost of the NIPT (minus expenses) dependant on your gestation at the time.
How quickly will I get my results?
SHEcares will send you your results via email within 5-14 days of your test. If you have received a higher chance result, we will contact you directly to arrange a follow-up Obstetric Consultant Online Consultation (included in the price) to discuss the results and your options for next steps.
